Welcome to Medical-Legal Network For Children, a network
dedicated to the medical and legal needs of children and low-income families. Our organisation is based on the belief that our children's
needs are of the utmost importance. Evidence highlights that children and adolescents
from socio-economically disadvantaged families and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities experience poorer health
than their less disadvantaged peers. Homeless young people reflect the most disadvantaged group, experiencing the worst physical,
emotional and social health outcomes. Australia's current lack of adequate housing, locational
disadvantage, unemployment, financial stress, discrimination, and personal problems such as mental illness, drug and alcohol
addiction, domestic violence and family breakdown significantly contribute to the difficulties faced by Australia's youth. Our aim is to foster knowledge and aid in the development
of an integrative network of medical and legal expertise to assist in promoting a preventative model to assist Australian
families. We believe that collaborative
partnerships which see the medical and legal professions working together for a common purpose will more effectively address
the factors contributing to children's ill-health and disadvantage to help children and young people in achieving the
best possible start in life.
A
2002 Supplementary Report entitled Positive outcomes from Integrated Health Promotion
identifies that 'the consideration of social and environmental factors alongside biological and medical factors
can enhance the effectiveness of health and well-being promotion, and increase the sustainability of the impacts of services
and/or programs' and this is what we seek to enhance.
